Makeup Tips For Beginners

Hola Beauties! The makeup world is enormous these days; there are so many products, tools, and techniques available that can be overwhelming if you are starting with makeup; trust me, even sometimes I can’t even get on top of the latest trends or products. This is why I want to share a few Makeup tips for beginners that will give you the basics for a good look if you are new to the makeup world.

This post is about Makeup Tips for Beginners

1. Understand your skin tone and undertone

You need to know your skin tone and undertone to find the right foundation shade. Skin tone refers to the color of your skin surface, categorized into four main types: Light, Fair, Medium, and Dark. Skin tone can change based on sun exposure; for example, I go from a medium to a darker tone when I tan.

Undertone is the natural color that is under your skin’s surface. There are 3 prominent undertones:

Warm: People with a warm undertone have hints of peach, golden, and yellow colors.

Cool: People with a cool undertone have hints of blue and pink colors.

Neutral: People with a neutral undertone have a mix of warm and cool undertones, very similar to their skin tone.

An easier way to identify your skin undertone is by checking your veins. If your veins look greenish, you have warm undertones; if they look blue or purplish, you have a cool undertone.

If you have neutral undertones, your veins may match the color of your skin.

For example, my skin tone is medium, and my undertone is neutral.

2. Know your skin type

It is fundamental to know your skin type, so you know precisely what formulas and ingredients are best for your skin. Avoid wasting money on unsuitable makeup products that won’t deliver the results you expect.

3. Know your eyes and face shape

As a beginner, it is good to know your face and eye shape for makeup application; I am not going to get into detail ( I will be writing one in detail soon), but based on your shape, you can apply your products differently. For example, my face shape is Oval, so I apply my blush and bronzer upwards towards the temples.

My eye shape is Hooded, so I apply my eyeshadow with my eyes open and above my natural crease.

4. Basic makeup starting kit

The first thing you need is makeup; if you want to start with a good makeup kit, it’s important to mention that you don’t need expensive products to succeed; many excellent, affordable, and drugstore products will give you high-end results.

Another essential point to mention is to start with the basics. You don’t need to get every foundation, primer, setting powder, etc.; look for products that match your needs and build from there. You can expand your collection later, but for now, focus on the basics.

You can check articles with the best drugstore makeup products in my Makeup section if you need some recommendations.

5. Always prep your skin

A good base is essential for good makeup, regardless of the foundation’s price or quality; if you don’t prep your skin, your makeup will fall apart.

When I talk about skin preparation, I am not talking about a makeup primer; it’s about the skincare routine before makeup application.

You can have a basic skincare routine, but ensure that you apply a good moisturizer before using foundation or any product that provides coverage.

6. Have good makeup tools

Makeup tools are essential for achieving a good look with your makeup. It doesn’t matter how good a product formula is, but the results will not be pretty if you don’t have good quality tools.

You don’t need expensive tools; many affordable products are fantastic; all my makeup brushes and sponges are from the drugstore, so keep that in mind.

Ensure you have a good set of face and eyeshadow brushes, and consider adding a good makeup sponge. You dont need many of them; get the essentials to start and add more to your collection if needed.

Here is a list of the brushes that, in my opinion, are necessary to start your makeup kit:

Face Brushes
  • Foundation Brush: I like using a kabuki brush to apply my base.
  • Blush Brush: A nice, big, fluffy brush is great for blush, and you can also use it to set your makeup.
  • Angle Brush: I love using this brush for contour and bronzer.
  • Concealer Brush: These brushes are perfect for blending your concealer and getting into those areas that need more coverage.
  • Small Tapered Brush: Ideal for highlighting and setting concealer.

7. Less is more

When I first started using makeup, I would apply so much foundation and concealer, thinking that was the key to looking flawless and perfect, but that is far from the truth. If you are a beginner, start by applying small amounts of product. See how it looks, and if you need more coverage, build it up. Remember, less is more!

Now that I have more makeup experience and am older, I always start with a small layer of foundation or concealer. Then I build it up in areas where I have sun damage to add a little more coverage, but I am still looking for that skin-like finish, even if it is a full-coverage foundation.

8. Concealer hack

Concealer is a must-have in your makeup collection. This product is not only meant for the under-eye area, but you can also use it to cover blemishes and serve as a base for more natural or makeup-free looks.

I recommend using a concealer close to your skin tone ( foundation) for blemishes and one shade lighter for the eye area.

Another essential factor to consider when choosing a concealer is its formula. For instance, if your under-eye area is dry, opt for a liquid, hydrating concealer. Check the best option according to your needs.

9. Set your makeup

ALWAYS set your makeup; this is a must-step in your routine for a flawless and prolonged look. Set up your concealer and areas where you get most oily to prevent your foundation and concealer from creasing.

Once you finish your look, use a setting and fixing spray to lock your makeup. Setting spray will melt all your products together for a flawless finish, and fixing spray will prolong your makeup.
