This blog post is about the Ultimate Beginner’s Skincare Routine for Glowing Skin.
Step 1: Cleanse Gently, but Thoroughly
Let’s kick things off with the most basic (but essential) step: cleansing! Cleansing removes dirt, oil, makeup, and sunscreen from your face.
What do you need to know about cleansing?
- Choose a gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin. Avoid harsh cleansers with alcohol or sulfates. If you’re not sure, look for words like “hydrating” or “gentle foaming” on the bottle.
- Double cleanse if you wear makeup or SPF. First, use an oil-based cleanser to gently melt away impurities, then follow up with a water-based cleanser.
This step sets the stage for everything else, so don’t skip it! Here are some recommendations for you to try on. These are my go-to gentle cleansers:
Step 2: Tone to Balance
You may wonder if toners are just another unnecessary step. Here’s the deal: a good toner balances your skin’s pH, preps it for better absorption of serums and moisturizers, and can even soothe irritation. At the same time, some toners can provide extra hydration, especially during harsh winters.
- Look for hydrating toners that contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, rose water, or aloe vera.
- Avoid alcohol-heavy toners that can dry out your skin.
A few spritzes or a gentle swipe of toner helps your skin feel fresh and dewy. Here are some recommendations for you to try on. These are some of my favorite toners:
Step 3: Serum – The Glow Booster
Here’s where the magic happens! Serums are lightweight, concentrated treatments that target specific concerns, like dullness, fine lines, or uneven skin tone.
- For glowing skin, choose a vitamin C serum. It’s a powerhouse antioxidant that brightens the skin and evens out the tone.
- If you’re dealing with acne, niacinamide or salicylic acid serums are your go-to.
Apply a few drops, pat them in, and with consistency, you will see how your skin will look glowy and fresh.
Here are some of my recommendations, these are serums that I constantly use and have provided me with incredible results. I also have an article with only drugstore products that will give you that radiant look at an affordable price.
Step 4: Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!
Don’t skip this step, even if you have oily skin. Moisturizer locks in hydration, protects your skin’s barrier, and leaves your skin feeling soft and plump.
- For dry skin, look for a rich cream with ceramides or shea butter.
- For oily skin, a lightweight gel moisturizer with ingredients like hyaluronic acid is perfect.
A well-moisturized face is a happy face! I have several articles with recommendations for sensitive and combination skin; if you’d like to take a look.
Here are some recommendations with products I am constantly rotating:
Step 5: Sunscreen – Your Skin’s Best Friend
If there’s one step you absolutely cannot miss, it’s sunscreen. SPF is the secret sauce for healthy, youthful, and glowing skin.
Never skip sunscreen, even on cloudy days or in winter; you still need to apply it to protect your skin from UV rays and prevent wrinkles, dark spots, and other signs of aging.
- Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every single day.
- Reapply every 2-3 hours if you’re outside. Trust me, your future self will thank you!
Here are some great recommendations:
Extra Tips for Glowing Skin
- Exfoliate 1-2 times a week with a gentle scrub or a chemical exfoliant (like glycolic acid) to reveal smoother, brighter skin.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and eating water-rich foods like cucumbers and watermelon.
- Get enough sleep (beauty sleep is real!) to give your skin time to regenerate.
