Impostor Syndrome is a condition that can affect physical and mental health. Impostors feel they are liars and need to work extra to show they deserve the position, which can be exhausting; at the same time, they don’t believe in their talents and feel they are not good enough.

In most cases, impostors don’t apply for a position, job, or any other step that can bring growth in their careers because they don’t believe in themselves. Consequently, Impostor Syndrome can cause more significant problems like Anxiety and depression because the person is not living to the fullest and is always under the impression that they will be criticized when going the extra mile.

Here are 5 tips to help you overcome this condition, start working on your dreams, and, most importantly, believe in yourself.

This post is about How to Overcome Impostor Syndrome

1. Switch your negative thoughts

When those negative thoughts start invading your mind, reframe them into more positive ones. If you see yourself thinking, “I’m not smart,” “If I ask, they will think I am stupid,” “If I was capable, I might be able to….” etc., try to catch yourself and change the narrative.

Remember that you are where you are because you are capable, intelligent, and competent, and nothing comes from luck.

I always tell my coworkers and those under me that there is never a stupid question; it’s better to ask than slow down the projects because you are afraid of asking.

2. Stop unrealistic expectations

Stop comparing yourself with others and having unrealistic expectations. Nothing is perfect, so if you make a mistake, learn from it and move on. Nobody is perfect, and if you compare your life with what you see on social media, where everything seems perfect, your expectations are too high, and you will always be disappointed.

Keep it real!

3. Love and Accept yourself

You need to learn to love and accept yourself. Have an inner conversation with yourself and see all your incredible qualities, get to know your needs, expectations, and dreams, and keep them in mind whenever you doubt yourself.

Remember, once you find yourself, you know exactly what you bring to the table, and stop thinking about others’ acceptance.

4. Talk to others

Acknowledge your feelings, and talk to a friend, family member, or therapist. Sharing your feelings and thoughts with somebody else can help you overcome them and get a different perspective.

In many cases, other people might be experiencing the same problem, and when they communicate their thoughts and experiences, this can help open your eyes to new possibilities.

5. Track your goals

When your negative thoughts invade your mind, remember how far you have come. Track your goals and success, and write down every step you took to get where you are. When the impostor comes, look at your notes and remind yourself how much you deserve to be here and all the hard work it took. Never give up!
